Fully involved fire at Princess and Victoria Streets

Kingston, ON, Canada / CKWS TV

KINGSTON – Dozens of firefighters have descended on an under construction apartment building in mid-town Princess Street.

The fire call came in just before 2 p.m. and a witness tells CKWS News to say he had “never seen flames like that before.”

Since the fire began there have been several reports of explosions – believed to be propane tanks on the construction site.

Another caller says that “flames were shooting above the building 10 to 15 feet” and that “large chunks of flaming debris were floating off the building.”

Newswatch’s Morganne Campbell is on the scene and says the crane operator is trapped above the flames and firefighters are not able to get to him.

The CFB Trenton Search and Rescue unit is sending a helicopter to assist in getting the crane operator to the ground.

A senior apartment building – Legion Villa – has been evacuated. The building is just steps away from the fire.

Rideau Public School, which is several blocks away has also been evacuated. Children are being taken to Winston Churchill School. Those who walk will have to be picked up by the parents. Children who take the bus will be bused home from Churchill.

Ash from the debris has floated from the fire scene to as far away as Helen Street.
