THE TRIAL OF A MOTHER AND SON CHARGED IN CONNECTION WITH A TELEMARKETING SCAM IS UNDERWAY IN KINGSTON. IT’S ALLEGED THE SCAM WAS CENTRED IN BELLEVILLE AND KINGSTON….. WITH HUNDREDS OF POTENTIAL VICTIMS. HERE’S NEWSWATCH’S MORGANNE CAMPBELL.
“Penny Kidd and her son Joshua Kidd are both charged with major fraud and proceeds of crime following a raid at a Princess Street office space where police allege a telemarketing scams was taking place.
They both have plead not guilty to the charges.”
We first brought you this story in October of 2011 when police led nine people away in handcuffs after they raided this non-descript office building in midtown Kingston. At the time police alleged the call centre was a front for a “boiler room” scam that victimized hundred of people across Canada and the United States.
At the time of the arrests RCMP Inspector Mark Van De Graff claimed the call centre was a factory for fraud.
“EACH OF THE CALL CENTRES WERE RUNNING TWO SHIFTS, MULTITUDES OF PEOPLE WORKING IN AN AUTOMATED SETTING, WHERE CONTINUOUS VICTIMS WERE ROLLED UP ON THE SCREEN. ”
There were two call centres involved in the raid — one here in Kingston another in Belleville.
At the time of the arrests investigators believed the fraudsters took more than three million dollars from those who believed they were supporting legitimate charities.
“The complex trial will include testimony from some 84 witnesses from across the country — the courtroom has been equipped with both video and audio links to help facilitate the testimony from those witnesses.
