CANADA’S NEW ANTI-SPAM LAW GOES INTO EFFECT ON JULY FIRST.
CANADA’S NEW ANTI-SPAM LAW GOES INTO EFFECT ON JULY FIRST. AS PART OF THE CRACKDOWN — THE GOVERNMENT IS ASKING CITIZENS TO FORWARD EACH PIECE OF SPAM THEY RECEIVE TO A FEDERAL E-MAIL. WHILE BIG COMPANIES THAT SEND OUT MASS E-MAILS MAY HAVE TO CHANGE THEIR PRACTICES — A QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY EXPERT DOESN’T BELIEVE THE LAW WILL HAVE MUCH IMPACT ON SMALLER BUSINESSES.HERE’S NEWSWATCH’S PAUL SOUCY.
AT THIS POINT IT’S COMMON PRACTICE. WHENEVER ONE CHECKS THEIR EMAIL – THEY HAVE TO DEAL WITH SPAM, SOMETIMES IN LARGE AMOUNTS.
“I have a few different email accounts, but my one I give to stores… it’s quite a lot. At least ten.”
“I get about five a morning in my email. Yeah they just go straight to the junk.”
“I usually get about thirty to deal with. It’s ludicrous that I still get as many as I do.”
BEGINNING JULY FIRST, THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS IMPLEMENTING SPAM REGULATIONS.IF ANYONE RECEIVES AN UNSOLICITED PIECE OF EMAIL – THEY’RE ENCOURAGED TO REPORT IT – AND THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR SENDING IT COULD FACE FINES.
“It could be as much as a million dollars per person – or ten million dollars or ten million dollars per agency.”
BILL STEWART IS WITH THE GREATER KINGSTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. OVER THE PAST FEW DAYS HE’S BEEN IN CONSTANT COMMUNICATION WITH MEMBER AGENCIES LETTING THEM KNOW OF THESE NEW RULES. MOST OF THEM RELY ON MASS-EMAILS AS A MEANS FOR ADVERTISING.
“Everybody is going to be looked at under this law. Obviously it’s after the big spammers, designed to go after the people who send out the emails that you don’t want to get.”
“This program is another example of a total waste of time by the federal government.”
DAVID SKILLICORN IS A PROFESSOR IN THE SCHOOL OF COMPUTING AT QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY. HE SAYS SMALL LOCAL BUSINESSES LIKELY WON’T BE AFFECTED BY THIS BECAUSE EMAILS SUCH AS THESE – AREN’T WHAT THE GOVERNMENT IS AFTER.
“A few people might get spams, and then send them off to the spam reporting centre. Then they’ll never hear anything ever again. Eventually we may find a few small prosecutions.”
HE SAYS WHAT THEY’RE REALLY AFTER ARE EMAILS SENT OUR WAY – THAT DON’T EVEN REACH OUR INBOX BECAUSE OF POWERFUL SPAM FILTERS. INSTEAD THEY CLOG UP BANDWIDTH FOR NETWORK PROVIDERS…WHICH IN SOME CASES ACCOUNTS FOR UP TO 90% OF TOTAL USAGE. PAUL SOUCY CKWS NEWSWATCH KINGSTON.
