The fate of an old Kingston factory could hinge on the vision of a Toronto architect. Councillors will decide next week whether to give “Raw Design” the contract to restore and redevelop the former Bailey Broom Factory, at 305 Rideau Street. Built in the early 1900’s – this long-vacant building is one of the few remaining links to the city’s industrial past. It’s on sale for only a dollar but the building has some heritage value. The mayor says raw design proposes to invest up to 1.7 million dollars to convert the building into office space for itself and room for start-up businesses.
Bryan Paterson, Kingston Mayor
“This particular developer does have experience in rehabilitating heritage buildings. Buildings that have perhaps become somewhat dilapidated being able to renovate them, renew them and being able to use them again so that’s certainly what we’re looking for.”
