University men’s hockey. It’s an early-season clash between Queen’s and R.M.C. The annual Lou Jeffries scholarship game is tomorrow night (Saturday) at 7:30 in Gananoque.
The annual match-up which raises the curtain on the pre-season is a special one for this Gananoque native.
Brett Gibson/Gaels Head Coach
“11 years of having this game and honouring a great human being — and bringing it back to my home town — it never gets old for me, it’s a great opportunity to showcase what I do for a living on the side with the Queen’s Gaels — I love being at home.”
Luke Bertolucci/Gaels Forward
“Ever time we step on the ice we want to compete and give it our best.”
That’s the 2016 recipient of the Lou Jeffries scholarship — Luke Bertolucci. The 1st-year Gael was a member of the 2014 Memorial Cup Champion Edmonton Oil Kings.
“We weren’t supposed to win that year — we had some great acquisitions at the deadline and we just glued together as a team and built-off that and had a great run and I hope to bring that same mentality here and hopefully help this team win a championship.”
“It’s amazing where the program has gone in 11 years — 11 years ago I probably couldn’t have recruited Luke to come across the country to play for us but this kids a special player — he knows what it takes to win and in just the 3 short weeks he’s been with us he’s proved why he is a Memorial Cup champion.”
