Council approves 6.5 million dollar grant for Kingston hospitals

KINGSTON – The city of Kingston is, once again, giving local hospitals a generous donation. It’s a 6.5 million dollar donation over the next 5 years to help purchase medical equipment. The gift was approved by a 9-2 vote last night. The city of Kingston has already been contributing annual grants to the ‘University Hospitals Kingston Foundation’ for about a decade. While some argued that local taxes shouldn’t be used to support provincial health care, others say a few million of municipal cash could leverage millions in provincial investment. The hospitals foundation will be lobbying other municipalities in the region to put up a share of funding as well.

Peng-Sang Cau/KGH Board Member:

“Absolutely they should donate as well because their citizens also are coming in to use these hospitals. So they absolutely should follow the lead of Kingston’s city council and donate as well to this worthy cause.”
