Just one week ago 15 year old Jonathan Ferreira was spending time with his friends doing what he loves the most – riding his snowmobile.
Last Wednesday evening – he and his friends were here – on Loughborough Lake.
According to police – they were retrieving a submerged snowmobile from the icy water and had a fire burning nearby for warmth.
Const. Roop Sandhu/Frontenac OPP: “A gas can, we believe at this point in time had caught fire and an attempt to put that fire out caused one of the males to be burned in the process.”
The Sydenham high school student was rushed to Kingston general Hospital with severe burns to his face and neck, as well as a small burn on his leg, according to his older sister
Haley Ferreira/ Johnathan’s Sister: “He had hot pads all down here and his face was being cooled down. He was not in a very good state at all.”
A few days later, Johnathan was transferred to the burn unit at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto – and both of his parents are there with him.
Having to take time off work and pay for travel and accommodation has taken a toll on the Sydenham-area family.
A go-fund-me campaign was launched by an extended-family member and within days their 3-thousand dollar goal was met and then some.
Haley Ferreira: “It picked up fast! We even had people – because I stayed here while he’s in Toronto – we had people coming here with donations as well.”
The Ferreira’s say they are grateful for the support they’ve received in the last week as they’ve made trips to and from Toronto.
They say Johnathan is still in pain but his condition has progressed to the point that he could be sent home later this week.
