University men’s hockey—on Thursday in Fredericton, the Queen’s Gaels will play the Varsity Reds from New Brunswick in the opening game at the Canadian Championships…
Coach Brett Gibson knows exactly what he’s going to say to his team before the opening game..
“I’m going to thank them–its been a great ride–whatever happens at the tournament its been a successful year but what an opportunity we have–these moments don’t come around very often so I want them to cherish the opportunity and learn from it and at the end of the day if we win the championship it would the cherry on top.”
“We made it there for a reason and were not going to change our game now..there’s a reason our team has made it to nationals and every team is a top team in the CIS–does’nt matter who we play–it will be a good test for our club –we have to play our game from our goaltender to our forwards–everyone has to contribute–we have to play hard in our own end and get the puck out and get some timely scoring.”
The Gaels captain says the unsung heroes of this years team–coaches Brett Gibson, Tony Cimellaro, Andrew Hausler and Ben Munroe
“When I came in 4 years ago it was kind of as different culture–maybe it was’nt so looked upon as winning –just kind of getting better but this year we adopted the attitude–and our coaches instilled that–this is a winning club–were looked upon in the league to be one of the top contenders every year from now on so I think it obviously starts with the coaching staff and they’ve definitely brought that and it shows on the ice.”
“I had the opportunity to play in this tournament when I played so I understand the importance of it but game one is critical–you cant play nervous–you have to play loose but whoever we play we’ll be ready to go–we’ll be prepared for them but I just want them to play–I dont want them to think about the magnitude of the game.”
