Family loses everything in devastating fire on Spooner Road

Kingston, ON, Canada / CKWS TV

Kingston – This is all that’s left of Elwood Richards home.  Charred remains and memories.  Just before 11-Wednesday night a fire sparked and quickly started to burn out of control.  Richards was watching tv when his grandson told him he saw smoke.

Elwood Richards/Home Owner
“So we went in and tried to do something, it was too much smoke and then some flames shot up and just told everybody to get out.”

The fire was so intense that a thick cloud of smoke and a glow from the blaze could be seen for kilometres.  Firefighters from 4-different stations and a water tanker rushed to the scene.  When crews arrived the home was fully engulfed.  All 5 members of the Richards family and their dogs got out safely.  But two birds perished.

Glenn Roy/District Fire Chief, Kingston Fire & Rescue
“Lots of fire, heavy involvement in fire, smoke too but lots of fire. The best thing that they did was get themselves out of the home and not try to fight the fire.”

Nikki Jhutti
“It took crews almost three and a half hours to get the blaze under control. Firefighters remained on scene overnight to monitor the situation to make sure the home didn’t flare up again.”

Fire inspectors are now combing through the rubble to try to piece together what sparked the flames.

Delbert Blakney/Fire Inspector
“The fire originated in a back portion of the house. There is heavy, heavy damage. It’s probable the structure will have to be taken down.”

Damage is estimated at 250-thousand dollars.  Devastating news to Richards who says he doesn’t have insurance.

Elwood Richards/Home Owner
“I just finished paying off my mortgage so that cancelled my fire insurance, I never got to go and renew it, perfect timing.”

A go-fund-me page has been set up to help the family in their time of need.  They’re currently staying with Richards’ brother until they figure out what to do next.  And even though he’s lost everything – Richards says he just thankful everyone got out alive.  Nikki Jhutti, CKWS News Kingston.
