KINGSTON – The city may be branching out by purchasing and planting some unique trees this year… To commemorate both the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge and the country’s 150th birthday. Tonight council directed city staff to look into the feasibility of purchasing at least 100 English oak trees similar to the one you see here. The oak trees the city wants to get their hands are descendants of ‘Vimy Oaks’ — which were sprouted from acorns a Canadian Vimy soldier brought back from the battlefield decades ago. City staff will be looking into planting these trees at suitable sites around Kingston as early as this fall.
Jim Neill/City Councillor:
“There are questions, legitimate questions, about cost and that’s why the primary direction to staff is that they’re requested to explore the feasibility of this.”
