Kingston man charged with robbery in Belleville

A Kingston man is facing charges after a failed shoplifting attempt in Belleville.

Police were called to a North Front Street business regarding a shoplifter Wednesday afternoon.

Staff reported the man made threatening comments toward them when they confronted him.

The suspect fled, but was found a short distance away by police.

When confronted by officers he jumped into the Moira River to try and escape, but was pulled from the water by police after floating a short distance.

William Bryant, 30 is charged with robbery, weapons dangerous and possession of a prohibited weapon (pepper spray).

No one was injured.
