We’ve been seeing a lot of devastation and hardship caused by the spring flooding — and it could lead to a larger presence of a familiar summer pest. A retired-biologist at Queen’s says recent flooding conditions are perfect for mosquitos to breed. It could mean a bumper crop of the pesky critters. The expert says they prefer shallow standing water. The only thing that may reduce your “swat” time is a prolonged dry spell.
Rudolph Harmsen: “Other species of mosquitoes are now coming out of the woods, they’re germinating. They will then become your pest if their breeding areas keep their water long enough.”
