KINGSTON – As the class of 2017 at St. Lawrence College files in for convocation ceremonies there’s some special guests that are also present — the ‘golden grads’ who were ‘proud to be SLC’ students 5 decades ago.
Gwen Childerhose from the Class of ’71 took secretarial science and says she remembers it like it was yesterday.
Gwen Childerhose/Class of 1971:
“It was the 60’s. Lots of dances. Athletics. It was such a small school that everybody knew everybody.”
The golden grads, aptly donning golden gowns are being honoured as St. Lawrence College celebrates its 50th anniversary… and the anniversary of the entire Ontario College System.
Glenn Vollebregt/SLC President:
“I don’t usually wear the gold gown but this is a special year for St. Lawrence College — a special year for Ontario Colleges and it’s a great way to honour our original graduates.”
Original graduates that are excited to reminisce with old friends and even former staff.
Peter Scott/Class of 1970:
“I remember our first president Robert Short. Some of our first teachers that I met here tonight… we both look older so…”
Dave Wilson/Class of 1971:
“In 1969 I was a fresh graduate out of high school. KCVI infact. Besides taking normal academic courses I was also playing basketball at the same time.”
“The theme of the 50th anniversary is the start of something amazing.”
And while most of the golden grads are well into retirement… they thank SLC for giving them the tools to have a successful career.
“A good grounding educational environment for the students to go into work.”
As for Childerhose, her husband is retiring from working at St. Lawrence College at the end of June so she’ll have yet another reason to celebrate.
“It’s like we’ve come full circle.”
