THE MOST ROMANTIC DAY OF THE YEAR IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER.

MANY TAKE ON THE USUAL TRADITIONS

DINNER PLANS AND PAYING A VISIT TO LOCAL FLOWER SHOPS.

BUT A QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR SAYS THERE IS ONE ASPECT OF THE DAY THAT COULD

MAKE OR BREAK YOUR DATE.

NEWSWATCH'S JAMIE PATTERSON EXPLAINS.

The traditions of Valentine's day can include everything from a bouquet of flowers, delicious treats or an intimate dinner date.

But a Professor at Queen's University says that planning your musical playlist may be the most important part.

Prof. Pegley

"Music is one of those parts of our lives that people tend to have a strong connection to."

Samantha Hume - Streeter

"It puts you in a better mood or a better state of mind. You feel closer to them because you have something in common."

Prof. Pegley has a guideline to help make your song choices.

Whether is was the first date, or first kiss, relate a song to that special memory.

Tim Coveney

"I'd say something that might bring a thought back, for example, our wedding song."

If you are just getting to know your date, use your song choices to show them what kind of person you are.

Prof. Pegely

"It's not that it is going to be all about you but it's a way of saying, this is who I am and I would like you to be a part of my life."

But keep in mind that they may not like all of your choices.

Jamie Patterson

"For this CD player to do it's job and turn up the romance this Valentines day, you need to be careful when picking your play list. Based on what you know about your Valentine, choose songs that are important to them, showing them your respect for their taste in music."

For those who have trouble picking those perfect songs, Prof. Pegley says you just can't go wrong with the classics.

Prof. Pegley "It's - you also have a cultural capital, that you know some of these songs and that might reflect more positively around you."

Whether you skate along to it, or request it on the radio -

- the right song can help get your Valentines day started on the right note.
