Here are the sports results from Monday:

HALIFAX - Team Canada has passed its most significant test at this year's IIHF World Hockey Championship with flying colours.

Shane Doan and Dany Heatley each scored twice Monday as the Canadians defeated Finland 6-3 in a matchup of unbeaten teams. They'll face either Norway or Latvia in Wednesday's quarter-final, pending the outcome of Monday's late game between Latvia and Germany.

QUEBEC - Russia and Switzerland played 60 minutes of hockey just so they could do it all again later this week.

Unbeaten Russia got first-period goals from Dmitry Kalinin, Alexander Ovechkin and Maxim Sushinsky and went on to defeat the Swiss 5-3 on Monday at the IIHF World Hockey Championship.

CLEVELAND - Fausto Carmona pitched a five-hitter for Cleveland's second consecutive shutout over the struggling Toronto Blue Jays, a 3-0 victory in Monday's doubleheader opener.

Cliff Lee, 6-0 with a major league-leading 0.81 ERA, was scheduled to start the second game for the Indians against Shaun Marcum (4-2). Carmona (4-1) struck out three and walked four in his second shutout and third complete game in 47 big league starts.

VANCOUVER - Two hundred Canadian communities are being asked by Olympic organizers to host parties for the 2010 Winter Games torch relay.

The communities are among the 1,000 stops the torch is expected to make in the 100 days before the Vancouver Games.

VANCOUVER - A plan to crack down on people attempting to scalp tickets to the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver is being applauded by Canada's Olympic committee and Games sponsors.

Vancouver's Olympic organizers promised hyper-vigilance on the resale of tickets when pricing was announced last fall. But with this month's deadline for sponsors and Olympic committees to put in their requests for tickets, they're stepping up counter-scalping measures.

EDMONTON - David Beckham and his L.A. Galaxy arrived in Alberta's capital Monday ready to play soccer, but minus their shooting star.

The MSL team confirmed late Monday that leading goal scorer Landon Donovan did not make the flight and will not play in Tuesday's friendly against the Vancouver Whitecaps at Commonwealth Stadium (9 p.m. ET).

VANCOUVER - Vancouver's Olympic organizers have chosen 200 communities to be the site of celebrations during the 2010 Winter Games torch relay.

While the torch will pass through 1,000 places in Canada, a select group of towns and cities are being asked if they'd be willing to host formal events when the Olympic flame arrives.

NEW YORK - League MVP Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett were selected to the NBA All-Defensive Team on Monday, along with Marcus Camby, Bruce Bowen and Tim Duncan.

Garnett, who helped the Boston Celtics to the league's best record, was chosen for the ninth time. The forward was chosen defensive player of the year last month.

BALTIMORE - Having earned a milestone victory at the Kentucky Derby aboard Big Brown, Kent Desormeaux hopes to keep his Triple Crown hopes alive with a sentimental win at the Preakness.

Long before he reached elite status in Southern California in the 1990s, the Hall of Fame jockey made a name for himself on Maryland race tracks. He won the 1987 Eclipse Award as outstanding apprentice jockey and was the leading winner at Pimlico Race Course in each of the next two years.

The main strength of the Toronto Blue Jays these days is pitching and that's a trend that goes up and down their farm system.

While seeking some offensive help last week, the lack of appealing options at triple-A Syracuse forced them to look outside the organization and bring in outfielders Brad Wilkerson and Kevin Mench. But whenever they need an arm, there never seems to be a shortage of capable pitchers to take the mound.

BALTIMORE - The Preakness lost a possible starter in Harlem Rocker, but may gain one in Kentucky Derby also-ran Gayego.

Gayego, who finished 17th after a sluggish start, is under consideration for another shot at Derby winner Big Brown in Saturday's second leg of the Triple Crown.

ROME - Tenth-seeded Vera Zvonareva extended her impressive streak of clay-court victories Monday, cruising past Ai Sugiyama of Japan 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the Italian Open.

Zvonareva won the Prague Open earlier this month and lost to Serena Williams in the final at Charleston, South Carolina, in her previous tournament. In between, Zvonareva posted a three-set win over Vania King on clay to clinch victory for Russia in the Fed Cup semifinals against the United States.

MILAZZO, Sicily - Daniele Bennati won the third stage of the Giro d'Italia on Monday in a massive sprint finish, and Liquigas teammate Franco Pellizotti held onto the overall lead.

Bennati finished the 221-kilometre leg from Catania to Milazzo in five hours 37 minutes one second. Erik Zabel finished second, followed by Danilo Hondo. "I've won at the tour and the Vuelta but never at the Giro, so this is special," Bennati said.

INDIANAPOLIS - Ladies and gentlemen, start your scrambling.

The rain that washed out 3 1/2 days of practice and one day of qualifications for this year's Indianapolis 500 is now forcing teams to adjust schedules, spend more time deciphering computer analyses and, of course, look for more speed.

NEW YORK - The America's Cup showdown between two-time defending champion Alinghi of Switzerland and BMW Oracle Racing of the United States can't begin until at least 10 months from now.

The court ruling is a victory for Alinghi. BMW Oracle Racing felt it had the right as Challenger of Record to hold the best-of-three series in October, but Alinghi argued it wouldn't be able to build a boat in time.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Jameer Nelson is sticking to his guarantee.

The Detroit Pistons don't blame him. Shortly after going down 3-1 in the second round, Orlando's point guard said the Magic would go on the road and beat Detroit to extend the series. "What am I supposed to do? Guarantee a loss?" Nelson asked Monday. "We've got to win the game. We have the confidence that we can do it.

LONDON - The World Anti-Doping Agency has spent more than US$1 million in legal costs in the Floyd Landis appeal.

WADA president John Fahey said Monday that the organization has contributed $1.3 million - five per cent of its total budget of $26 million - to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's case against the American cyclist, who was stripped of his 2006 Tour de France title for a doping offence.
